Big news for our iconic Old Bridge! Medway Council is looking at plans to carefully remove and test the historic cantilever structure that used to carry pipes. It's all about making sure we preserve this vital part of Rochester's heritage for years to come.
Listed building consent for the remaining cantilever structure attached the Old Bridge is from 1926 and originally carried two cast iron utility pipes across the Medway. These redundant pipes have been removed under a previous Listed Building Application and the current structure is not fit for purpose and requires replacement. In order to facilitate and inform on the design for this replacement the decision has been made to remove the existing structure and undertake some materials testing and enabling works prior to final design and installation. This application covers the removal, enabling and testing works for this scheme.
